What is Webcam FPS?

FPS (frames per second) measures how many individual frames your webcam captures every second. Higher FPS means smoother, more natural-looking video. Most webcams are rated at 30fps or 60fps, but the actual delivered FPS depends on lighting conditions, USB bandwidth, CPU load, and which application is using the camera. This test shows your real-world FPS — not the spec sheet value.

Why is My Webcam FPS Low?

  • Poor lighting — cameras automatically slow down shutter speed in dim light, reducing FPS
  • USB hub — connecting through a hub limits bandwidth; use a direct USB port
  • Other apps — if Zoom or OBS is already using the camera, FPS available to this test is reduced
  • Driver or settings — some webcam software locks FPS at 15 or 20; check your webcam app settings
  • CPU throttling — heavy CPU load can cause dropped frames

FPS Requirements by Use Case

Video Calls

15–30 fps

Zoom, Meet, Teams all work fine at 30fps. 15fps is the minimum for acceptable quality.

Live Streaming

30–60 fps

OBS and Twitch recommend 30fps minimum. 60fps gives noticeably smoother motion for gaming streams.

Video Recording

24–60 fps

Cinematic feel at 24fps. Smooth motion at 60fps. Match your camera to your project's frame rate target.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check my webcam FPS?

Click "Start FPS Test" above and allow camera access. The tool will show your live FPS in real time using the browser's requestVideoFrameCallback API for accurate frame counting. You'll also see a per-second history graph and min/max/average FPS statistics.

Why does my 60fps webcam only show 30fps?

Many 60fps webcams only deliver 60fps in good lighting conditions. In dim environments, the camera increases exposure time to compensate, which automatically halves the frame rate. Add more light to your scene and the FPS should increase. Also check that your webcam's companion software isn't capping FPS.

What FPS do I need for Zoom calls?

Zoom recommends a minimum of 15fps and targets 30fps for standard video. For HD video, 30fps is standard. Zoom itself caps video at 30fps for most plans. Running above 30fps won't improve Zoom quality, but ensures you have headroom even when conditions are not ideal.

Does this test work on Mac and iPhone?

Yes. This FPS test works in Safari on Mac and iOS, Chrome and Firefox on Mac, and Chrome on Android. On mobile devices, the front and rear camera can both be tested. Note that some mobile browsers limit camera access to 30fps regardless of hardware capability.

Can I test FPS for OBS streaming?

This test shows your browser's camera FPS, which gives you a good baseline. However, OBS may deliver different FPS depending on its capture settings. For OBS-specific testing, start this test first to confirm your camera delivers 60fps, then open OBS and check the Stats panel (View → Stats) for actual streaming FPS.
