Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about testing your mic, webcam, and speakers online.
Mic
Why is my microphone not working?+
The most common causes are: browser permission denied (click the lock icon in your address bar and allow microphone access), wrong input device selected, or the microphone is muted in your OS sound settings. Run our mic test to diagnose the exact issue.
Does the mic test record my audio?+
No. All audio processing happens entirely in your browser using the Web Audio API. Your audio is never sent to our servers. We cannot hear or store anything you say.
Why does my mic show 0% input level?+
Check that the correct device is selected in the dropdown. Also check your OS sound settings — the microphone may be muted or the input volume set to zero. On Windows, open Sound Settings → Input and check the volume slider.
What does clipping mean?+
Clipping occurs when your microphone input is too loud and the audio signal exceeds the maximum level, causing distortion. Lower your microphone gain or move further from the mic to fix this.
Webcam
Why is my webcam not showing video?+
Make sure you allow camera access when prompted by the browser. Also check that no other app (Zoom, Teams, etc.) is currently using the camera — browsers can only use one app at a time.
How do I test my webcam resolution?+
Use our Webcam Test tool — it automatically detects and displays your camera's resolution, FPS, and aspect ratio in real time.
Why does my webcam look blurry or dark?+
Poor lighting is the most common cause. Make sure you have a light source in front of you, not behind. Also clean your camera lens — dust and fingerprints reduce clarity significantly.
Speakers & Audio
How do I test if my speakers are working?+
Use our Speaker Test tool — it plays test tones through your left and right speakers separately so you can confirm each channel works correctly.
No sound during speaker test — what should I check?+
Check that your system volume is not muted, the correct output device is selected in your OS settings, and your browser tab is not muted (right-click the tab to unmute). Also try a different browser.
How do I test headphones?+
Use our Headphone Test tool which plays audio in each ear separately to detect channel imbalance, distortion, or dead drivers.
General
Do I need to download anything?+
No. All tests run entirely in your browser. No extensions, plugins, or downloads required.
Which browsers are supported?+
All modern browsers are supported: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. For best results, use the latest version of Chrome or Edge.
Is this tool free?+
Yes, 100% free forever. No account or signup required.
Why does the browser ask for permission?+
The browser must ask your permission before any website can access your microphone or camera. This is a built-in browser security feature. MicCheck Online only uses your mic/camera for the test — we never record or transmit anything.
