Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about testing your mic, webcam, speakers, keyboard, and other devices. Each section links to the full FAQ on the relevant tool page.
Microphone
Full Mic Test FAQ →Why is my microphone not being detected?
Browser permission is denied, wrong input device is selected, or another app has exclusive mic access. Check the address bar lock icon for blocked permissions.
Does the mic test record my audio?
No. Audio is processed locally in your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is sent to our servers — ever.
My mic works here but not in Zoom — why?
Zoom has its own device selection. Open Zoom Settings → Audio and manually select the same microphone shown in our test.
What is microphone clipping?
Clipping happens when the input signal is too loud, causing distortion. Reduce your mic gain or input volume in OS sound settings until the level meter stays below 90%.
Webcam
Full Webcam Test FAQ →Why is my webcam showing a black screen?
Another app likely has exclusive camera access (Zoom, Teams). Close all other camera apps, then refresh and re-run the test.
Does the webcam test record my video?
No. The camera feed renders locally via the MediaDevices API. No video is transmitted or stored anywhere.
Why is my webcam image quality low or blurry?
Lighting is the biggest factor — add a lamp facing you. Also clean the lens and check your driver isn't forcing a low-resolution output.
Speakers & Audio
Full Speaker Test FAQ →No sound during the speaker test — what do I check?
Verify system volume is not muted, the correct output device is selected in OS settings, and the browser tab is not muted (right-click the tab).
How do I test my headphones?
Use the Headphone Test — it plays audio in each ear separately to check channel balance and driver health.
Keyboard & Mouse
Keyboard Test →Does the keyboard test store my keystrokes?
No. Keystroke detection runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our servers.
Why doesn't F11 light up in the keyboard tester?
F11 triggers browser fullscreen and is consumed by the browser before our listener sees it. F5 (refresh) behaves the same way.
Platform Tests (Zoom, Meet, Teams)
All Platform Tests →My mic works in the browser but not in Teams — why?
Teams on Windows uses WASAPI Exclusive Mode and can hold a device lock from a previous session. Go to Teams Settings → Devices and switch your mic to a different device, then switch back to force Teams to release and reacquire it.
Google Meet can't hear my mic even though Chrome can?
Google Meet inherits Chrome's permission state. Go to chrome://settings/content/microphone and confirm meet.google.com is listed as Allowed — not just miccheckonline.com.
