Webcam Resolution Guide
Different resolutions have very different impacts on video quality, file size, and what platforms support them. Here's what each means for everyday use.
| Resolution | Pixels | Aspect Ratio | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Content creation, streaming studios |
| 2K QHD | 2560 × 1440 | 16:9 | High-quality streaming, YouTube |
| 1080p Full HD | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Professional video calls, recording |
| 720p HD | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | Standard video calls, Zoom/Meet |
| 480p VGA | 640 × 480 | 4:3 | Low-bandwidth calls, older webcams |
| 360p | 640 × 360 | 16:9 | Minimal bandwidth, emergency calls |
Understanding Frame Rate (FPS)
Frame rate (frames per second) determines how smooth your video looks. Higher FPS = smoother motion, especially important for streaming and fast-moving content.
Choppy, often used in low-bandwidth video calls. Fine for static scenes but motion looks jerky.
Cinematic standard. Smooth enough for most uses. Common in budget webcams.
Standard for video calls and web streaming. Smooth and widely supported on all platforms.
Ultra-smooth. Great for gaming streams and professional broadcasts. Requires more bandwidth and CPU.
Why Your Camera May Show Lower Resolution Than Advertised
USB bandwidth limitations
USB 2.0 ports can't handle 4K or even 1080p 60fps video. The camera downscales to fit available bandwidth. Use a USB 3.0 port (blue) for maximum resolution.
Privacy shutters or laptop camera covers
Physical privacy covers reduce light and sometimes cause the camera to drop to a lower quality mode or fail entirely.
Browser camera API caps
Some browsers (notably Safari on older macOS) impose resolution caps on camera streams. Chrome and Edge typically provide the best camera quality access.
Another app is using the camera
If another application (Zoom, Teams, Skype) already has camera access, it may have claimed a lower-resolution stream. Close other apps before testing.
Webcam software downscaling
Manufacturer software (Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse) can modify the camera output. Disable or uninstall these to see native resolution.
Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the camera resolution test?▼
Very accurate. Our tool requests the maximum resolution the browser can provide (up to 4K) and reads the actual resolution from the camera track settings. The result reflects exactly what resolution the browser is receiving from your camera.
Why does my 4K camera show as 1080p?▼
4K (3840×2160) requires significant USB bandwidth and a capable browser. On USB 2.0 or in browsers with camera API restrictions, 4K may be capped. Try a USB 3.0 port and Chrome for best results.
Can I test multiple cameras?▼
Yes. If you have multiple cameras, use the dropdown to switch between them. Each device's resolution and FPS are measured independently.
What does FPS mean in the context of webcams?▼
FPS (frames per second) is how many individual images your camera captures each second. 30 FPS is standard for video calls. Lower FPS makes motion appear choppy; higher FPS (60+) makes it smoother but requires more processing power.
Does the resolution test record my video?▼
No. The video stream is displayed locally in your browser and is never uploaded or recorded. We only read resolution and FPS metadata from the camera track.
