Webcam Not Detected on Windows – 6 Fixes

Windows not recognizing your webcam? Follow these 6 steps to fix webcam detection issues in Windows 10 and 11.

When Windows does not detect your webcam, the cause is usually a driver issue, privacy setting, or hardware conflict.

Fix 1: Check Windows Camera Privacy Setting

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera
  2. Make sure Camera access is ON
  3. Make sure Let apps access your camera is ON
  4. Ensure your browser is allowed

Fix 2: Check Device Manager

  1. Press Win + X → Device Manager
  2. Expand Cameras or Imaging devices
  3. Yellow warning icon → right-click → Update driver
  4. Camera missing → Action → Scan for hardware changes

Fix 3: Unplug and Replug (USB Webcams)

  • Disconnect the USB webcam
  • Wait 10 seconds
  • Plug into a different USB port
  • Wait for Windows to install drivers

Fix 4: Disable and Re-enable the Camera

  1. Device Manager → Cameras
  2. Right-click your camera → Disable device
  3. Right-click again → Enable device

Fix 5: Update or Roll Back the Driver

  • Device Manager → right-click camera → Properties → Driver
  • Try Update Driver first
  • If problem started after a Windows Update, try Roll Back Driver

Fix 6: Run the Windows Troubleshooter

  1. Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters
  2. Find Camera and click Run
  3. Follow the instructions
