How to Allow Camera Permissions in Chrome, Firefox & Safari

Fix 'camera access blocked' errors in your browser. Step-by-step instructions for allowing camera and microphone permissions in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge.

If your webcam or microphone isn't working in a browser-based app, the most common cause is blocked permissions. Here's how to fix it in every major browser.

Why Browser Permissions Matter

Modern browsers require explicit user permission before any website can access your camera or microphone. This protects your privacy, but it also means a single "Block" click can prevent all camera/mic access until you manually change the setting.

Fix in Google Chrome

Quick Fix (via Address Bar)

  1. Look for a camera or microphone icon in the URL bar (far right side)
  2. Click it — a popup shows the current permission
  3. Change "Block" to "Allow"
  4. Refresh the page

Via Site Settings

  1. Click the padlock šŸ”’ or ā“˜ icon in the address bar
  2. Select "Site settings"
  3. Find "Camera" and "Microphone" in the list
  4. Change both to "Allow"
  5. Reload the page

Chrome Global Permission Settings

  1. Go to chrome://settings/content/camera
  2. Make sure it's set to "Sites can ask to use your camera"
  3. Check the "Blocked" list — remove the site if it appears there
  4. Do the same at chrome://settings/content/microphone

Fix in Mozilla Firefox

Via Address Bar

  1. Click the camera/microphone icon in the URL bar
  2. Click the X next to "Blocked" to remove the block
  3. Reload and click "Allow" when prompted again

Via Permissions Manager

  1. Click the padlock icon in the address bar
  2. Select "Connection Secure" → "More Information"
  3. Go to the "Permissions" tab
  4. Find "Use the Camera" and "Use the Microphone"
  5. Uncheck "Use Default" and select "Allow"

Fix in Apple Safari (Mac)

  1. Go to Safari → Settings (or Preferences on older Macs)
  2. Click the "Websites" tab
  3. Click "Camera" in the left sidebar
  4. Find the website in the list and change to "Allow"
  5. Repeat for "Microphone"

Safari on iOS/iPhone

  1. Open Settings (iOS Settings app, not Safari settings)
  2. Scroll down and tap Safari
  3. Under "Settings for Websites," tap Camera and Microphone
  4. Change from "Deny" to "Ask" or "Allow"

Fix in Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the padlock in the address bar
  2. Select "Permissions for this site"
  3. Find "Camera" and "Microphone"
  4. Change to "Allow"
  5. Refresh the page

Edge also follows similar paths as Chrome since both use Chromium.

Fix in Opera

  1. Click the padlock in the address bar
  2. Click "Site settings"
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to "Allow"

Testing After Fixing Permissions

Once you've changed permissions, visit miccheckonline.com/mic-test and click "Start Mic Test." If the browser asks for permission again, click "Allow." The volume meter should respond when you speak.

Why Permissions Reset Sometimes

Browsers may reset camera/mic permissions if:

  • You clear browsing data (clearing "Site Settings" resets permissions)
  • The website URL changes (HTTP vs HTTPS, www vs non-www)
  • You're using incognito/private mode (permissions don't persist)

Still Blocked?

If browser permissions are correct but still blocked:

  1. Check your operating system permissions (Windows Privacy Settings or macOS System Settings)
  2. Look for a hardware mute switch on your headset
  3. Check if another app has exclusive control of the device
  4. Try a different browser to isolate the issue
