How to Fix Microphone Echo on Windows & Mac
Experiencing echo on calls? Fix microphone echo caused by speaker feedback, wrong settings, or audio driver issues.
Microphone echo makes calls difficult. Here is how to eliminate it.
Why Echo Happens
Echo occurs when your microphone picks up sound from your speakers, which is then transmitted back to callers — who hear their own voice with a short delay.
Fix 1: Use Headphones
The single most effective fix. When audio goes directly to your ears, the microphone cannot pick it up.
Fix 2: Reduce Speaker Volume
Lower volume = less acoustic feedback into the microphone.
Fix 3: Enable Noise Cancellation
Windows:
- Right-click speaker → Sound → Recording → your mic → Properties → Enhancements
- Check Acoustic Echo Cancellation
Zoom: Settings → Audio → Suppress Background Noise → High
Teams: Settings → Devices → Noise suppression → High
Meet: Settings → Audio → Noise cancellation → ON
Fix 4: Disable Microphone Monitoring
- Right-click speaker → Sound → Recording → your mic → Properties
- Click Listen tab
- Uncheck Listen to this device
Fix 5: Increase Microphone-to-Mouth Distance
Moving the mic closer to your mouth (and further from speakers) reduces feedback pickup.
Fix 6: Disable the Built-in Microphone
If you have both a USB mic and a built-in mic active, disable the built-in one in Device Manager.
