Google Meet Microphone Not Working – Quick Fix

Microphone problems in Google Meet are frustrating, especially mid-call. Here are the most common causes and their fixes.
Quick Checklist
- Refresh the Google Meet page
- Check that your mic is not physically muted
- Make sure no other app is using the mic (Zoom, Teams, etc.)
Fix 1: Allow Microphone in Meet
- In Google Meet, look for the camera/mic icon in the address bar
- Click it → set Microphone to Allow
- Reload the page
Fix 2: Select the Right Microphone
- In Meet, click the three-dot menu → Settings
- Click Audio
- Under Microphone, select your actual device (not "Default")
- Speak — you should see the sound bar move
Fix 3: Test Before the Call

Fix 4: Fix Echo Issues
- Use headphones instead of speakers
- Lower your speaker volume
- Enable noise cancellation in Meet Settings → Audio
Fix 5: Chrome Permission Reset
- Go to chrome://settings/content/microphone
- Find meet.google.com in the blocked list
- Remove it and reload Meet

- Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings
- Under Input, make sure your microphone is set as default
- Check that the volume is not at zero
